Juday film is RP entry to 2009 Oscar Awards

A period film set in Cuyo, Palawan, beat a movie about caregivers in London, an indie film about Tondo gangsters, and a love story among contractual workers in the Oscars derby.

Ploning, a film produced by Panoramanila Pictures Co. has been chosen as the country’s entry to the 2009 Oscar Awards’ best foreign language film category.

The Board of Governors of the Film Academy of the Philippines approved the selection of Ploning.

The special committee members were Director Jose Carreon, secretary of the Directors Guild of the Philippines, Inc.; Director William Mayo, president of the Philippine Motion Picture Directors Association; Johnny Delgado, chairman of the Actors’ Workshop Foundation; Pablo S. Gomez, president of the Screenwriters’ Guild of the Philippines; and Manny Morfe, president of the Productions Designers Guild of the Philippines.

Also reviewed were Caregiver, Tribu, a Cinemalaya festival winner and Endo.

DingDong Dantes is the only Filipino to make it to the roster put together by one of the largest and most popular networks in Hollywood with 88 million cable subscribers in the US alone, and in 600 million homes internationally. Also in the list are Los Angeles Galaxy star player David Beckham, rugby union footballer Dan Carter (New Zealand), actor Gilles Marini (France), actor and fashion model Michael Lewis (Israel) and singer Kostas Martakis (Greece). “Actually, nung nalaman ko, e, natatawa ako dahil talagang never in my wildest dreams ko naisip na mapapasama ako dito. Reader’s Digest is a widely read general interest family magazine, which started in the United States and has international editions, including Asia. The comedian said he was so surprised because he thought the magazine would only write a feature story about his life. “Parang ‘di ako makapaniwala kasi may nagpadala ng sulat regarding the cover. Sabi pangalawang Pinoy palang daw ako na mag co-cover.” he said. “So parang di ko alam gagawin ko talaga. Kasi alam ko lang may feature. ‘Di ko alam na mag co-cover pala.” he added. He is a mainstay of GMA Network’s gag show Bubblegang and he is also the host of Bitoy’s Yari Ka.

Filipino teleseryes a big hit in Africa

ABS-CBN’s drama series like The Promise (Pangako Sa Yo), Timeless (Sana’y Wala Nang Wakas) and The Long Wait (Kay Tagal Kang Hinintay) are all blockbuster hits in Africa.

“African TV stations broadcast at least one ABS-CBN Philippine telenovela a day while the other TV stations air two to three times a week,” says Reena de Guzman-Garingan, International Sales and Distribution Director at ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corporation.

“There are channels that have been broadcasting two Philippine telenovelas from Monday to Friday and another one on Saturdays and Sundays. In countries like Kenya, Cameroon and Tanzania at least two networks are currently airing ABS-CBN Philippine telenovelas, which always consist in 45-to-50-minute episodes,” explains the executive.

Kristine Hermosa is now a superstar in Africa as the continent was hit by Philippine telenovela craze, spawning websites and fan clubs. “Our telenovelas are the hot items in foreign newspapers; there’s the case of a TV station in Africa that delayed its launch hoping to have the Philippine telenovela stars to grace their celebration. The Philippine telenovela business in Africa is a phenomenon and has captured advertising revenues never achieved before by the networks,” states de Guzman-Garingan.
So why does Africa embrace Philippine stories? The executive said it’s because of the mixture of distinct facial features on the screen, ranging from Asian to Spanish, and also explains that due to the infusion of multicultural context, they have captured both female and male audiences.

During the World Cup month, the time slots of The Promise, Timeless, The Long Wait and other ABS-CBN’s telenovelas airing on various networks across Africa were pre-empted. As a result, the male audience was warned by their wives of having no meals on their tables for not having their favorite Philippine telenovela on air.

Cherry Pie Picache gets 2nd int’l best actress award

Last year, she impressed an international jury for her portrayal of a lesbian in "Kaleldo." This year, Cherry Pie Picache once again impressed foreigners for her portrayal of a caring mother in the film "Foster Child." The Filipina actress won her second Best Actress Award from the Durban International Film Fest in South Africa for her portrayal of a woman temporarily taking care of children about to be adopted. Brillante "Dante" Mendoza's film Foster Child also bagged the Best Film Award in the 29th edition of the DIFF, beating the 21 other competing films from all over the world. The Filipino film competed with entries from France, Germany, South Africa, Taiwan, and the United States, among others.

Direk Dante sent a text message to PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) regarding this victory at 2:15 am (Manila time) on August 2. The award for Best Film comes with a cash prize. The acclaimed director is currently in Durban, South Africa, to field Foster Child as one of the competition features and Tirador in the official selection. One of the films chosen for the official selection is Leatherheads. This football movie set in the 1920s stars George Clooney and Renee Zellweger. The 29th Durban IFF featured 200 films from more than 95 countries from July 23 to August 3, 2008.

In the previous edition of the film fest held annually in South Africa, Cherry Pie was adjudged as Best Actress for the movie Kaleldo (international title: Summer Heat) "for a sustained and controlled performance of the character of the gay sister, Jess, who despite her apparent cultivated masculine exterior betrays a softness which can hardly be seen but can be felt by all." - Philippine Entertainment Portal

Yasmien was nominated in the 2008 Sexiest Vegetarian Celebrity poll of people for the Treatment of Animals (PETA) - Asia Pacific. This is the largest animal right organization in the world and they aim to protect animals from human cruelty. Another local celebrity who's also nominated is Chin Chin Guituerrez. Foreign Celebrities who are nominated along with them are Alicia Silverstone, Natalie Portman, Alyssa Mylano and Chelsea Clinton.

How does director Chito Rono feel he was chosen by Star Cinema direct "Caregiver," the comeback movie of megastar Sharon Cuneta?

"I am overwhelmed and really chaleged. I haven't finished editing but as I go through the film, even shed tears in most of the scenes because I felt the sacrifices of the Filipino," says the award winning director at the press conference of Caregiver the other day at the Studio One of ABS-CBN.

"Especially Filipinos who love their work, you will see how they sacrifice. There is discrimination (on Filipinos abroad) most of the time and that's one sacrifices one has to endure."

Meanwhile, Direk Chito said they didn't encounter so much problems working in London because they have the necessary permits. "Ayos din ang equipment namin. If we need to be on the streets, we are on the streets. Hindi kami nagtatago kasi we have permits kaya were able to shoot even in Buckungham Palace," say Direk Chito.

How was Sharon able to cope with the demands of her character?

"The character Sharon plays as Sarah, all that I needed to remind her was what kind of a person Sarah is. Kung paano siya maglalakad, kung paano siya manamit - all that Sharon had to do was to be in character. Talagang kailangan, in a way, ipasok niya ang karakter sa katauhan niya."
