Jasmine Soriano Trias (born November 3, 1986) is a Filipino-American singer and entertainer who was the third-place finalist on the third season of American Idol due in part to tremendous call-in support from California, New York, and her native state of Hawaii. She has released two albums to date, one in the United States and one in the Philippines.

2004-2006

After Trias' appearance on American Idol, her fanbase grew in the United States and in foreign countries where the show was aired: Australia, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore, and Taiwan, among others. The Manila Times newspaper captured the mood of her ancestral country in an April headline, "Everybody Wants Jasmine." During the American Idol season, hundreds of internet fan sites from over a dozen countries were established in several Asian and European languages.

Playboy to launch in Philippines, eyes mature Dads

Written by Ms. Confuse on Saturday, March 29, 2008

MANILA (Reuters) - Playboy magazine is launching in the Philippines next month and will be targeting mature men who like well-written articles and tasteful photographs of semi-nude women.

"Maxim and FHM are called laddy magazines. We can be called a Dad magazine," Beting Laygo Dolor, Playboy Philippines' editor, told Reuters on Thursday.

"We are targeting a more mature market, Filipino men, 30 and above."

"There will be no full frontal nudity."

Mens' magazines with risque photos are already sold in the Philippines, which despite being a largely Catholic country has a macho culture that encourages promiscuity.

Although rural areas are more conservative, Manila and other large cities have a relaxed attitude to sex.

Dolor, who describes himself as a "bad Catholic," said the religion's values had influenced the decision not to go for a raunchier look for the magazine.

"I don't want to be ashamed to show it to my mother," said the father of four. "I have daughters in their twenties. It's something that I want them to also enjoy. I want them to be proud of their Dad."

Founded in 1953, Playboy has some 20 local editions around the world that cater to local taste rather than simply exporting and translating its U.S. content.

The magazine will be sold across the Philippines at a cost of 199 pesos ($4.76) and 70 percent of the content will be local.

Playboy's first edition in Indonesia in 2006 sparked protests although it had no nudity and less flesh visible in the issue than many other magazines on sale in the world's most populous Muslim country. Its editor was cleared of distributing indecent pictures last year.

Dolor said he didn't expect any uproar when his magazine hits the news stands on April 3.

"It's supposed to be a very good read," he said.

Enrique Inglesias - Half Filipino, Half Spanish

Written by Ms. Confuse on Wednesday, March 26, 2008

Enrique Miguel Iglesias y Preysler (born on May 8, 1975, in Madrid, Spain) is a Spanish pop singer-songwriter. He is the son of singer Julio Iglesias and Filipina Isabel Preysler.

Iglesias's career started on Indie label Fonovisa who helped turn him into one of the most popular artists in Latin America and in the Latin market in the United States, selling more Spanish albums than any other artists in that period of time. Before the turn of the millennium he made a crossover into the mainstream English market and signed a unique multi-album deal with Universal Music for an unprecedented $48,000,000, with Universal Music Latino to release his Spanish albums and Interscope to release English albums. Iglesias has had two Billboard Hot 100 #1s and one #3, and he holds the record for producing eighteen number #1 Spanish-language singles on the Billboard's Hot Latin Tracks. His album sales currently total over 40 million albums, making him one of the biggest-selling Spanish musical artists in the world.

Enrique is the brother of Chabeli Iglesias, Julio Iglesias Jr., the half-brother of Tamara Falcó and Ana Boyer (from his mother's side); and Miguel Alejandro, Rodrigo, Cristina, Victoria and Guillermo Iglesias (from his father's side). He is also said to be close to cousin Jess Iglesias, who is of Spanish/Jewish descent.

In June 2000, radio personality Howard Stern received a tape of a supposedly off-key (MP3 of Iglesias singing, Video of Iglesias singing) along to the track "Rhythm Divine". Stern played this humorous clip throughout the week on his radio show insinuating that Iglesias lip synched and couldn't sing well outside the studio, even suggesting that Iglesias himself did not sing on his albums, comparing him to Milli Vanilli. Iglesias flew straight in to New York to appear on Stern's show, singing acoustic versions of "Rhythm Divine" and "Be with You", after which Stern told Iglesias he had silenced his critics. Iglesias would go on to say that controversy and his appearance on the show was the best promotion he could have. (see full story here[1].)

Iglesias confirmed that his trademark facial mole was surgically removed in August of 2003.

Normally when Enrique performs his song "Hero" in concert, he randomly selects a fan from the audience to appear on stage while he sings the song to her. Afterwards, he sometimes kisses her. He has continued this trend of inviting an audience member onto the stage even when performing to gay audiences.

HIS MOTHER

Isabel Preysler (born Maria Isabel Arrástia Preysler on February 18, 1951 in Manila, Philippines) is a Filipina journalist, model and former TV talk show host in Madrid, Spain. She is known in the Spanish press as "La Reina de Corazones" (the Queen of Hearts) ever since a best-selling biography by the same name was published about her. She is the mother of international pop superstars Enrique Iglesias, Julio José Iglesias, Chabeli Iglesias, Tamara Falcó and Ana Boyer.

Preysler was born in San Lorenzo, Manila, Philippines, the third of six children to a rich business Filipino family of Basque-Spanish descent. She attended the Assumption Convent, a private Catholic school. Due to her good behaviour, she was often selected to represent the Virgin Mary in the local Christmas nativity scenes.

Her nickname as a child was "Chabeli", which would later be the nickname of her first child. According to the book "Reina de Corazones" by Paloma Barrientos, she dated Gregorio Araneta, Charlie Lopez, and Bobby Santos, among others, as a teenager.[1] Her older brother Enrique died in Hong Kong due to a heroin overdose. She named her second son Enrique Iglesias, in honor of her deceased brother. Joaquin, her second oldest brother, also had problems with drugs, but overcame them and now lives in Canada.

During her youth, Isabel participated in a charity beauty pageant for the Sheraton Hotel in Manila and was crowned queen. Jun Ikalav, a playboy with a bad reputation, started dating Isabel. This worried her parents, and at the age of 18, she was sent to live in Madrid with her uncle and aunt to study at Mary Ward College, an Irish Catholic university in Spain, where she studied Accounting. It was at a party in 1970 that she was introduced to a family friend by the name of Julio Iglesias, who at the time was not yet a famous singer. The couple had their wedding just seven months later and were married for seven years, during which time they had three children, Chabeli, Julio Jr. and Enrique. In accordance with their rising careers, Julio as a singer, and Isabel as a model in Spain and Europe, they exploded onto the scene in 1971 and became overnight superstars in Spain and Latin America.

Following their divorce in 1978, Isabel launched her own career as a journalist for Spanish magazine ¡Hola! and her first interviewee was Julio himself. She also interviewed Richard Chamberlain. She married the Marquis de Grignon, Carlos Falcó, on 23 March 1980, a short-lived marriage resulted in the birth of a second daughter, Tamara. She later married former Spanish finance minister, Miguel Boyer, with whom she has another daughter, Ana. This marriage symbolized for critics the alliance of the ruling Spanish Socialist Workers Party, part of the leftist opposition to Francisco Franco, and to the "beautiful people" (aristocracy and bourgeoisie).

Often dubbed "La Perla de Manila" by the Spanish media ("The Pearl of Manila"), readers at Hola magazine have voted Isabel as the most elegant and best-dressed woman in Spain for 1991, 2002, and 2004, and she has consistently topped the best-dressed lists over the years in various Spanish magazines.

In 1984, she hosted the Spanish lifestyle TV programme, "Hoy." She has been chosen by several companies to be an image sponsor for their products, including Ferrero Rocher, Suárez jewelery, and, most notably, the Spanish tile company, Porcelanosa.

In 1987, her two sisters moved to Spain with their families to be closer to Isabel.

Her father, Carlos Preysler, has passed away. Her mother, Beatriz Preysler, still lives in Manila where Isabel is known to visit frequently with her children. She is close friends with Maurice Arcache, a local openly-gay Philippine journalist and socialite. She frequents social events in Manila, including events hosted by the Spanish Embassy of the Philippines. She is also friends with Miriam Quiambao, Miss Philippines-Universe 1999, ever since they met at a party hosted by the Philippine Daily Inquirer, a national newspaper, and with fellow Filipina and acclaimed fashion designer Monique Lhuillier, who she met in Los Angeles during a trip. She is known to wear Lhullier gowns at social events in Spain.

In May 2001, she was Prince Charles' guest of honour for the opening of his Spanish Garden at the Chelsea Flower Show in England. She was his guest of honor again in 2005 at a garden party during a trip to Spain by the Royal Crown.

In 2004, she became Spain's welcoming host for David and Victoria Beckham when she hosted a welcoming party at her house for the celebrity couple. She became close friends with Victoria and was often photographed shopping with her during their stay in Madrid. [2]

Most recently she launched her official website at the suggestion of her son Enrique, who is one of her biggest fans. She continues to be the national spokesmodel for Ferrero Rocher, Suárez jewelery, Manolo Blahnik shoes, Chrysler cars, and Porcelanosa tiles, for which American actor George Clooney recently joined her in Fall 2006 to represent the brand in a new advertising campaign. [3]

In 2006, she was also honored along with Hillary Clinton, Shakira, and Yoko Ono among others with the Women Together Award, which honors women for their philanthropical contributions to the United Nations in New York, making her the first Filipina woman in history to ever win the prestigious honor. [4]

She, her family, and her home are frequent presences in Spanish magazines. She also helps participate in events for the Philippine Embassy in Madrid.

In 2007, she and her daughters were invited by Prince Charles of England to be guests of honor at the Clarence house at their estate in Britain and was voted out of a total of more than 40,000 Hola magazine readers as the most elegant woman in Spain.

Cristan Lee Judd (born August 15, 1969, in Abilene, Texas) is an American actor and choreographer. He is best known for his failed marriage to Jennifer Lopez.

Before Hollywood, Judd spent his early years growing up on Air Force bases in Angeles City in the Philippines and Hawaii. His mother is Filipino, his father is white. The Air Force then moved his family to Niceville, Florida, where he attended Niceville High School. While in Florida, Judd, an avid athlete, spent a lot of time surfing and golfing. With a golf handicap of four, he even considered going pro after graduation, but instead decided to go to college. While in college, he landed his first job at Disney World with friend and colleague, Wayne Brady.

At age 21 Judd became interested in dance. Within a year, he switched jobs and began dancing professionally with Disney. He was hired to dance with Michael Jackson for the 1995 MTV Video Music Awards and then danced with Jackson on both the Dangerous and History tours, eventually becoming lead dancer for the tour. In 1999, he performed at the Billboard Music Awards with Celine Dion, the MTV Music Awards with N'SYNC, and in 2000 at the American Music Awards with Enrique Iglesias and Brian McKnight, and for "Best Song" nominee That Thing You Do at the 69th Annual Academy Awards. Judd also teamed up for the first time with choreographer Eddie Garcia, a collaboration that continues to this day, to choreograph the 2000 Tour for Jordan Knight.

Since that time, Judd has danced in and choreographed numerous music videos including My Way for Usher, Jump, Jive, & Wail for the Brian Setzer Orchestra, If I Could Go for Angie Martinez and Tango for Julio Iglesias. He also directed the music video, Ain't It Funny-Remix, with Ja Rule. Judd then became creative director for Handprint Entertainment, overseeing a $5 million budget and delivering NBC's concert special "Let's Get Loud."

He met future wife Jennifer Lopez in Spain when he was hired to direct her music video for "Love Don't Cost a Thing". They were married on September 29, 2001. The marriage ended in June 2002. He also composed Jennifer Lopez's song, "Alive", which was selected as the theme song for the movie Enough.

Judd and his partner Eddie Garcia produced an interactive dance DVD released in summer 2005, and has prepared the Midnight Fantasy musical for the Luxor Resort in Las Vegas.

Chef Alex Dino - Chef of Fortune

Written by Ms. Confuse on Saturday, March 22, 2008

The February 2008 is sue of Fortune Magazine featured the best three company cafeterias across America (Google, Ebay, and Factset Research Systems) and their outstanding chefs. Among the best three chefs cited by Fortune is Chef Alex Dino, the brilliant Pinoy behind the "standout cafeteria cafe" of Factset Research System in Connecticut.

Born and raisedd in Tondo, Manila, Alex Dino is secocnd to thee eldest of 4 children. He and his brother Lawrence and Dennis and sister Khat have been exposed to the cafeteria business ever since they were children. What used to be hard work for such a young boy proved to be the best training ground for this career of choice.

"I remember growing up in the Philippines," Alex related to Asian Journal. "My mother Fe, owned a cafeteria (Fe's Carinderia) which sustained our family since she and my father separated when we were all very young."

He recalled his daily routine in Manila before his mother emmigrated in the early 80's.

"My daily routine as I was growing up was to wake up very early in the morning to go to Divisoria with my mom. We would shop for all the food stuff that we needed for the carinderia. As soon as we got back, I helped in preparing the ciands that will be served for lunch and dinner. I would then take a little rest before I got ready for school."

Alex stayed behind and took a course in Business in the University of Santo Tomas. After college, his passion for food influenced his choice in looking for a job. He worked in the food industry while he waited for his immigration papers ti be processed. Alex was first employed at Baltimore Spice (Phils.), Inc., which is engaged in trading of food ingredients and customized blending of spices and seasonings. He also worked at Mix Plant Inc. which offers a wide range of pre-mixes for baking needs and various seasonings for poultry, other meat products and snack foods.

"The two companies are known for making food seasoning and pre-mixes. They are also into trading different flavoring and spices. These job experience in my mother's carinderia taught me a lot and gave me so much advantage as the lessons helped me in my career," said Alex.

Alex finally joined his family in Connecticut in 2001. He decidedd to further study and master culinary arts at the Art Institute of New York city. "It was hard adjusting to the new life in the United States. Specially when I started going to culinary school," amitted Alex. "But I was really so focused. I determined to be a good student. So, every school term, I was always in the honor roll," he added.

Alex worked full-time in groucery and deli shop while studying full time. "I graduated 2003 and did my externship in Alta Restaurant hired me as a line cook." Being new, I was doing the most menial jobs like washing pots and pans, mopping the floor, cleaning the kitchen etc. That was my initiation period," said Alex.

From Alta restaurant, Alex later moved to Whole Foods market as production chef. "I was in charge catering and daily prooduction but my work ended early because I was in the early morning shift. So, I was able to get a second job. I worked in Marriot Hotel as a banquet cook in the evening shift. Later, I was promoted to sous chef or assistant to the executive chef in Marriot."

Two years ago, in 2006, Alex was hire as executive chef and asked to run the Cafeteria of Factset Research Systems (the top 52nd company in Fortune's 100 best companies to work for in America). "I guess they just really needed a chef at that time and they decided to give mme a shot,: said Alex humbly. "I think it was worked well for us," he added.

Dino's job at Factset is no mean feat. Every working day, he is tasked to prepare breakfast and lunch for employees at the cafetreria. He also personally serves around 20 top managers who dine at a separate dining room.

"My job and my name is always on the line, everyday," states Dino. "My stuff of 12 and I have to fedd 800 people within two hours at breakfast and at lunch. You can just imagine how difficult that is! And we have many different food stations at the cafeteria -- there's pasta station, the Chinese food station, the grill and carving stations (with roasted filet mignon and other steaks), the bake goods, deli, pizza, soup and desserts stations. I am in charge of preparing food daily for all those stations," said Alex.

"What I like about this job is that I get to start my day very early and finish early afternoon. Then, I still have time to do my other activities," he said. "Im a big cycling fan and I run marathon as well. In fact, I have joined the Boston Marathon twice, finishing around 400th, out of about 10,000 participants."

Maybe it's because he cooks so hard at work that Alex no longer has the energy or desire to cook when he gets home. "I only cook at home for special occasions," he admits. "But not Filipino dishes, I love French cuisine."

His advice to his kababayans who want to achieve the American Dream -- "Dont give up. Open your eyes and ears and be a learner. If you keep continuing to learn things and skills, before you know it, you will outsmart everyone around you." (AJ)

Kevin Paves

Written by Ms. Confuse on Tuesday, March 18, 2008

Stylist to the stars Ken Paves is the man responsible for giving members of the Hollywood elite their trademark tresses, including Jessica Simpson, Eva Longoria and Jennifer Lopez. Through his best-selling line of hair extensions, he's given women around the world a chance to look like stars, too. Nate talks with Ken about his inspiration and how he defines beauty.

Growing up in Detroit, Michigan, Ken says his mother—a 4'1" woman of Portuguese/Filipino descent—was a great role model to him because she embraced her own unique beauty. With beautiful dark skin, a full nose and round face, Ken's mother "was not at all the homogeny of beauty that the industry represents," he says. "My mom was a great role model for that—for always loving herself."

As a stylist, Ken says his goal is to highlight each woman's unique beauty. He says he always instructs clients to focus on their best features, rather than any perceived flaws. The result he hopes to achieve is a woman who radiates confidence in her own skin. "It's amazing what happens to a woman when she really takes a moment and looks in the mirror and identifies with an element of 'self,'" Ken says.
Born the youngest of three children to Helen and Gary Paves in New Baltimore, a suburb outside of Detroit, Michigan, Ken (sometimes referred to as Kenney) credits his mother Helen for his entry into the world of hair and fashion. He was born female, but eventually made the transition to male at the age of 18. He also came out of the closet to his parents before going to school.[citation needed] He graduated in 1994 from a cosmetology school in St. Clair Shores.

Will Disney Be Charice's Next Stop?

Written by Ms. Confuse on Sunday, March 16, 2008

First, the bad news: Up to now, Charice pempengco and her mom Raquel haven't gotten back theirr passports which were stolen along with other valuables by a Salisi Gang while they were having dinner last week in Barrio Real, Calamba, Laguna.

Now, the good new: Mother and daughter will get their new passports on March 7 and, hopefully, their British visas in time for their trip to London second week of March to finalize Charice's guesting on The Paul O'Grady Show (the British counterpart of the popular US TV show Ellen, hosted by Ellen DeGeneres, in which Charice guested in late Decemeber last year).

And still more good news: Mother and daugther are scheduled to fly to New York for the negotiation with Disney which is interested in signing up Charice, Representing the Pempengcos in the negotiation is lawyer Edward Shapiro, the same guy who made it possible for Charice to guest on Ellen. If ever an agreement is reached, Charice will not just do a reccord for Disney but also appear in Disney projects, including High School Musical 3 which stars another Filipina, the contreversial Vanessa Hudgens.

Well, good luck, Charice! And may you bring home the bacon from London and from New York.

Fil-Am in American Idol faces cyberspace scandal

Written by Ms. Confuse on Sunday, March 09, 2008

The latest season of the popularity show. American Idol is proving to be more than just singing and scornful Simon Cowell remarks.

Recently, it's also about scandals and stunning revelations on the background of its roster of contestants, according to Philippine Entertainment Portal.

The PEP report said that includes Filipino-American Ramiele Malubay.

According to reports, controversial photos of Ramiele are currently popping up in cyberspace, showing the 20-year-old talent grabbing the breast of a co-worker in a sushi bar.

Fox News reported that there's another photo where, this time, the hand of Ramiele's friend was caught placed on her breast.

People think the revealed photos may either strngthen or weaken Ramiele's chances going on to the final stretch of the contest. "If you're hated, you're doing something right," wrote Ramiele when asked to list down her favorite quote on her profile.

But Ramiele's issue paled in comparison to the scandal faced by another semi-finalist named David Hernandez. The Associated Press recently reported that David used to be a gay-club stripper rendering lap dances on mostly male patrons.

The reports said that David was employed at Dick's Cabaret, a club joint located in Phoenix, for three years.

Speaking to AP, Dick's Cabaret manager Gordy Bryan was quoted saying "He had the look and the type that people like, so he made pretty good money here."

Based on his employment record, it was found that David last reported at Dick;s Cabaret on September 30,2007. He never renewed his state license.

If there's any good news for Ramiele and David, it seems they will both stay on American Idol despite the contreversies bounding them - until they are voted out of the show, of course, according to the PEP report which was posted on GMW Network website. GMA Networl is the host o Philippine Idol and American Idol.

Ramiele and David are still in the competition and are expected to sail through the Final 12.

Melissa Reyes Biography:

Melissa Reyes is from Cypress, California, who, before auditioning for the television reality series, Pussycat Dolls Present: The Search for the Next Doll, appeared in B5’s “U Got Me” music video. She was also a member of the dance company, Team Millenia, with whom she did several concerts and shows. Reyes began taking dance classes (jazz and hip-hop) in the eighth grade, and also spent her time learning how to sing. Her parents, who had hoped that Reyes would pursue a career in medicine or business, were very supportive of her artistic endeavors. She decided to try out for the show being an avid fan of the Pussycat Dolls.

As a finalist on Pussycat Dolls Present: The Search for the Next Doll, Reyes fared very well in the competition, having made it to the Final Four and ultimately placing second, losing the spot on the troupe to Asia Nitollano. She also won the immunity challenge where the finalists were given the opportunity to dance back-up for the Pussycat Dolls. Despite the tension that brewed between her and Nitollano, Reyes said that she is glad for her fellow finalist and that she has regretted what she said about Nitollano and her daughter.

Jasmine Trias on Ramiele Malubay

Written by Ms. Confuse on Monday, March 03, 2008

LOS ANGELES - When Ramiele Malubay landed on the top 24 contestants in American Idol season 7, she admitted that one of her idols is former "AI" finalist Jasmine Trias.

In an exclusive interview with Philippines News (Janet Susan R. Nepales), Trias gives advice and pointers to Malubay to help the latter realize her dream of becoming the first Filipino American Idol.

Here is the interview.

Do you still watch 'American Idol ever since you left and went on your own?
Yes, I still watch the show every occasionally whenever I get the chance to. I like to keep up with the new talent that appears on the show.

How different or similiar are the contestants during your time and the latest seasons?
Every show is going to be different. There are different contestants, with different personalities and style of singing. However, I think that the Show has not changed in that their goal is to find the next American Idol.

A Filipina American, Ramiele Malubay, made it to the top 24 and from the very first time she auditioned, she already told the judges that you were her idol. Did you see that audition? Ehat can you say about that comment? Do you get a lot of similar reactions from young aspiring singers?
Yes, I saw that audition and I was very happy to hear that I had inspired her in some way. To hear that and to know that I have inspired people with what I love to do, really makes my "job" worth it.

Do you feel pressure that these young aspiring singers looking up to you and that you should always set a good example to them?
Absolutely, setting a good example and being a role model is what being an American Idol is all about. There is an amount of pressure to make sure that I am making good decisions, representing myself in a positive light, to make sure that I am being a good role model because nobody's perfect, people make mistakes, I make mistakes, and it's what makes us human.

What would you advice Ramiele Malubay in order to stay long in the competition?
My advice to Ramiele would be to stay true to who she is, to never give up, to always be strong and positive, to remember to have a great time through this one in a life time experience, and to choose the right song, the song that best represent who you are.

What would you tell her to make it in the industry? What would be the do's and dont's?
In addition to the advice above, I would tell her that there are a lot of snakes in the music industry. So, she needs to surround herself with people that sincerely look out for her best interests; family is very important to have because they will always look out for what is best for you. Finding a good manager is also very important to making it in the industry.

If you were given another chance to join 'American Idol', what would you have done diferently and why?
I would not have done anything differently. I believe that everything that happened, good and bad, on the show happened for a reasin and I would not change anything about my experience.

Do you still get in touch with your former 'American Idol' colleagues? If so, with whom?
I keep occasionally with few American Idol colleagues from my season: Latoya, Camile Velasco, John Stevens, Fantasia, and Jennifer Hudson.

What have you been busy lately?
I have been preparing for my movie that will be shooting with GMA, for my album that will launch in the Philippines and the U.S., and I am getting ready for a promo tour that will promote the movie and my new albums.

Have you been in touch with the judges? With whom?
No. While I was on American Idol, the contestants were not able to create a rapport with the judges outside of the show. Most of the communications with the judges were only on the show, Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

What would you tell Ramiele about handling critics and dectators? And Simon Cowell who was not impressed with her at the audition?
She should take the criticism constructively and used it toher advantage to improve for overall talent and performance. Simon will always be Simon, but I would telll him to just lighten up and smile more often.

Angie Pepa - Defiance and Dedication

Written by Ms. Confuse on Sunday, March 02, 2008

Something - The Beatles

Baltimore - It was the tailend of fall 2005 and the first day of Swebohemian Festival, the biggest people's arts and crafts convergence in the city. Angie Pepa was performer #4 Arlington Stage, fronting two Budweiser booths and besides a row of four portapotty units.

Her time was set 2:15pm, amidst a tough early afternoon crowd of mostly snooty self-minding Appalachian bikers surveying post-puberty girls breaking in newly-dyed velvet hairdos and fela market urchins exploring collectible junks for eBay purposes.

Not a friendly gig, indeed. Yet amidst a mix of confident swagger and contemplative longing. Angie Pepa rehashed a Lisa Loeb song from being a tired morning-after apology to sweetly languorous tribute to a young woman's life on the fingers of defiance and dedication, vengeance and vulnerbility.

Angie Pepa is a 19-year-old Filipino American singer/songwriter based in Gaithersburg, Maryland. She has been performing at various open mic venues and Pinoy rock concerts in Maryland, Virginia and Washington DC in the last four years.

In November 2004 - just year or so of visibility - she was given the rare opportunity to open for Side A, a premier Filipino rock and soul band, at the Lisner Auditorium at the George Washington University in DC.

"My music is very personal, like words from a diary," she writes in her Myspace blog. In cuts "Confused" and Lovesong" - from his debut CD. "All of the Above" - we hear an eager kid reinventing unconventional pop that works despite, or because of, her overstuffed brain. And although she tries to channel Avril Lavigne's angstaddled verbosity in most of her songs, she harks back to pained detachment and self-examining defiance that is closer to Jill Sobule or Chan Marshall.

Other choise cuts in the album include, "Lost" and "No Matter What" -- both defining parameters between sodden and serious. Brassy, intensely personal sorrow that is true blues, not nouveau soul or pop whine.

Not suprisingly, Pepa envisions herself crossing the cultural divide to mainstream audiences -- proof of the aforementioned courageous foray at Sowebohemian Fest.

Her father Eric and northeast-based organizer and Infamas founder Jimmy Almario work together in pushing her star beyong the Filipino musicians in the U.S.

"Angie excels in her own right, she;s not just a great cover act," says Almario. Pepa, he adds, mirrors the kind of multi-talented Filipino artist tat Infamas wants to support.

Watch out for the impending transformation of Angie Pepa from an exuberant adolescent mulling over a new pair of fancy red shoes to defiant, fire-breathing muse crooning about broken valentines and feisty amazons.
