Happy Halloween Joke

Written by Ms. Confuse on Friday, October 31, 2008

Jesus and Satan were having an on-going argument about who was better on the computer. They had been going at it for days, and frankly God was tired of hearing all the bickering.

Finally fed up, God said, "THAT'S IT! I have had enough. I am going to set up a test that will run for two hours, and from those results, I will judge who does the better job."

So Satan and Jesus sat down at the keyboards and typed away.

They moused.

They faxed.

They e-mailed.

They e-mailed with attachments.

They downloaded.

They did spreadsheets!

They wrote reports.

They created labels and cards.

They created charts and graphs.

They did some genealogy reports

They did every job known to man.

Jesus worked with
heavenly efficiency and Satan was faster than hell.

Then, ten minutes before their time was up, lightning suddenly flashed across the sky, thunder rolled, rain poured, and, of course, the power went off..

Satan stared at his blank screen and screamed every curse word known in the underworld.

Jesus just sighed.

Finally the electricity came back on, and each of them restarted their computers. Satan started searching frantically, screaming:

"It's gone! It's all GONE! "I lost everything when the power went out!"

Meanwhile, Jesus quietly started printing out all of his files from the past two hours of work..

Satan observed this and became irate.

"Wait!" he screamed. "That's not fair! He cheated! How come he has all his work and I don't have any?"

God just shrugged and said,

JESUS SAVES

Bloggers VS Entrecard

Written by Ms. Confuse on Thursday, October 30, 2008

It seems that many blogger is very affected on what happening to entrecards new rules. They started deleting blogs by administrators of Entrecard and bloggers doesn't like it. It's been in many discussion because of unfair steps they doing of their users.

Like me, who have been deleted because of some various reason, they said I only blog because of advertising purposes. And it's not true, You can see reviews on my blogs but I don't have reviews everyday I only signed for 2 advertisers and some of my blogs only got one.

ENTRECARD IS A BIG FAT SCAM!!! DON'T BUY CREDITS FROM THEM. THEY ARE NOT A REPUTABLE AD AGENCY. IT IS FINE FOR FREE SERVICE BUT NOT FOR PURCHASING ADS...I HAVE NEVER BEEN MORE TICKED OFF BY ANYONE FOR THEIR RUDENESS!!!

Pinoy loves to shop

Written by Ms. Confuse on Tuesday, October 28, 2008

New Trinoma Mall across Philam Homes Edsa and adjacent to Shoe Mart at North Ave. Quezon City, Philippines. Video taken June 2008. This is proof that the Philippines is not a poor country. If shoppers are only going there for a stroll and not buy, then most shops will be closed. Aside from the Food Court, all floors are peppered with Dinning Places with waiting lines. Any Filipino that says Philippines is poor, sees the cup half-empty. I see the cup, half-full.

Benedict Carandang competes for British film awards

Written by Ms. Confuse on Tuesday, October 21, 2008

The 27-year-old cofounder of Tuldok Animation Studios will compete for the prestigious Screen Entrepreneur prize in the United Kingdom with his counterparts from China, India, Indonesia, Lithuania, Mexico, Nigeria, Poland, Slovenia and Thailand. He will also be the country’s delegate to the London Film Festival, where he will meet film and TV professionals from London, Cardiff and Bristol. Carandang is the producer of Ramon del Prado’s Libingan (The Burial), a 20-minute animated feature about a child who encounters mythical creatures on her first visit to the province to meet relatives. The film takes inspiration from Sagada’s hanging coffins. Carandang’s dream of building a predominantly Filipino animation studio was born in 1998 when, as an exchange student in Pittsburgh, he won a prize to visit Pixar Animation Studios to observe the making of “A Bug’s Life.” Libingan is the product of that collaboration. They got a grant from the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, and the rest is history.

“The main thrust of Tuldok, which now has more than 70 freelance animators, is to develop an independent animation production model without the physical studio. “Utilize your available resources and take risks,” Carandang advises. “We want to inspire other groups to create similar models. After all, animation is not just about outsourcing—we can also create animation with original Filipino content. Will power is all we need!

Pinoys bid for bigger piece of blogging pie

Written by Ms. Confuse on Tuesday, October 14, 2008

Gone are the days when journals were kept from prying eyes. With the advent of blogs, thoughts of an individual -- whether just plain ranting or take on national issues -- can now be read in full and accessed by anyone around the Internet. Notwithstanding the issues the popularity it may have stirred, blogs have provided a venue where one can show off his creativity and writing prowess in a wide range of topics. In the Philippines, Filipino bloggers are also making their niche in the fast-growing blogging industry, especially with the opening of this avenue of non-traditional media.… normally these (bloggers) are individuals who wouldn’t find themselves, for example, in traditional media. They wouldn’t have the time to [do the] real job of a writer but [if] they have free time, they would devote [their time], for example, blogging. Sonido pointed out that blogging is not limited to written words. It can also involve videos, podcasts and photographs. The style of writing itself is also not restricted to descriptive type only. Poetry is one way to put across a blogger’s thoughts. Sonido was one of the organizers of the Philippine Blog Awards (PBA) 2008 held last month. The event is held yearly to recognize Filipino blogger talents and "help give Filipinos a louder voice in cyberspace."

Diversity
The PBA, now on its second year, basically showcases what the Philippine blogging community can and has achieved, according to Sonido. In last month’s contest, more than 20 bloggers in at least 30 categories were named winners. By 2009, more categories are expected to be added to the current list. The growing number of categories shows diversity in the blogging community.

It's not limited to moneymaking and ranting. I mean they’re not bad, kung baga there's many colors in the rainbow… when you do this (blogging), one of the many benefits you develop [is] your writing and presentation skills.

A big percentage of blogs are personal, Sonido admitted, and the biggest challenge for the blogging community is to go beyond this "stereotype." For instance, blogger Ferdz Decena, who started his blog five years ago, chronicles his adventures and experiences as he travels to different places. Decena’s blog was named the 2008 best travel blog by PBA. He updates his blog thrice a week at least and he said it would take him four hours to finish one entry.

It's like a magazine. The discipline of creating a magazine also applies in the Web as well.

Aside from travel blogs, Sonido said bloggers also dwell on subjects such as yoga and their restaurant-hopping experiences. Juan Karlo Licudine, whose blog was declared the best technology blog, said that the hardest part of keeping a blog is sustaining and increasing the readership. For Sonido, being consistent in writing is also one of the things that a blogger should be aware of in order to entice the readers to keep coming back to his blog.

Good Life Insurance

Written by Ms. Confuse on Tuesday, October 14, 2008

LIFE INSURANCE COMES IN three flavors. Term insurance offers plain-vanilla protection at a low cost. Then there's whole life, which has a savings component. A third type, the return of premium, is essentially a hybrid of the first two. Term life is generally recommended, as its low premiums allow consumers to get maximum coverage at little cost. (They can then invest on their own the savings they'll reap by forgoing pricier options.) But don't just take our word for it. Before you head to an insurance broker's office, you should be familiar with the pros and cons of each policy type. Insurance agents are notorious for their heavy-handed sales tactics. Arming yourself with some knowledge ahead of time is the best way to make sure you wind up with the policy that's right for you. It's easy to buy. All you need to do is figure out how much you need — and how long you'll need it, find ideal insurance coverage — and then shop around a bit to find a competitive rate. A broker could help you out, of course, but you also can do quick searches on the Web at site like Insuranceonline.pro . Just make sure the company you ultimately select is financially stable by checking out its rating with a service. Go with an insurer that's rated A or better.Try Insurance online for good term life insurance. They offer you to lower your policy rates. Visit and know.

One lucky bettor wins P131-M Superlotto jackpot

Written by Ms. Confuse on Monday, October 13, 2008

A single lucky bettor correctly guessed the six-number winning combination of the Superlotto 6/49 draw Sunday, earning him or her more than P 131 million. Sunday's winning combination was 42, 12, 46, 26, 49, and 19, and the exact jackpot as of 8:30 p.m. was P 131,367,621.60. The Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) said Sunday's jackpot was one of the biggest jackpot prizes for the Superlotto. It was also the biggest since March 2008 when a single bettor won the prize pot of more than P249 million. Sunday's draw was the 15th since the first in August, when the prize money was just P16 million. The jackpot ballooned because nobody won the P117 million during Thursday's draw.

"Nakikita natin yung sudden na pagspike ng ating premyo. From an average of P10 million, noong Huwebes po ang ating itinaas, from last Sunday's draw, ay P13 million," PCSO spokesman Larry Cedro said. The PCSO said sales for their lotto tickets did not go down despite the economic crisis as their patrons are pinning their hopes on lotto jackpot prizes during these hard times. "Bagamat sa sitwasyon na hinaharap ng ating bansa, hindi apektado at patuloy yung pagtangkilik ng ating mga kababayan sa ating produkto. Malaking tulong hindi lang para sa kanila kundi sa mga nangangailangan rin," Cedro said.

Santiago is in Korea to attend the film event. “Andong” also won Best Short Film at the Cinemalaya last July. Best Short Film or Sonje Award comes with a $10,000 cash prize. Chris Martinez’s “100” won the Audience prize, which is dubbed the KNN Award and which comes with a $20,000 cash prize from the KNN Foundation. Martinez, who is in Korea with actress Tessie Tomas, said that he and Tomas “jumped for joy” upon learning the news from festival programmer Kim Ji-Seok. China’s “Jalainur” and Korea’s “Land of the Scarecrows” won Best Films. “100,” which competed in the New Currents section, also received a favorable review from The Hollywood Reporter’s Maggie Lee who described it as “thoughtfully scripted and performed with a delicate balance of gravity and humor.” All the screenings were sold out in one minute. “100” and “Andong” are among seven films from the Philippines that were screened in the Korean festival, along with Jerrold Tarog and Ruel Dahis Antipuesto’s “Confessional,” Francis Xavier Pasion’s “Jay,” Joel Ruiz’s “Baby Angelo,” Dante Mendoza’s “Serbis” and Adolf Alix Jr.’s “Adela.”
“100” will have its commercial run in local theaters on Dec. 3.

Cheap price but good quality

Written by Ms. Confuse on Tuesday, October 07, 2008

Economy today is getting worse and worse and almost everything is getting expensive. I remember when I I'm in the Philippines when I was young. My mom always told me not to waste any food because it hard to buy it. Be thankful that we have something to eat not like some children that can't eat because of poverty. There no different nowadays in past years. Everyday there is a news that..this thing get, market go down and many more. That is why I grew the importance of money handling. When it comes to material things its OK not to buy expensive ones and I'm like that when shopping. Although, occasionally I buy one that is I think I deserve even its expensive and if its my budget I'll buy it. I love making our house look good and putting all things together. I like the Cheap Rugs that I bought at Superiorrugs.com. They have many selective good Rugs in good price and this is what I'm looking for. Good quality with cheap price. Call me cheap if you want but this the way I am. And this Area Rugs that I saw in their site, its really look nice if I put it on my living room. Its going to be look nice with my furniture.

CONTROVERSIAL FILIPINO film “Serbis” won two top awards at the 6th Pacific Meridian International Film Festival held in Vladivostok, Russia from Sept. 13 to 19. Brillante Mendoza was named Best Director and lead star Gina Pareño, Best Actress. “Serbis,” the RP entry in the main competition of the Cannes International Film Festival last May, received negative reviews from international critics. “That’s why I feel vindicated now,” Mendoza told the Inquirer via SMS. The movie is about a family in Pampanga living in a decrepit theater that is a front for male prostitution. Mendoza competed with 18 other filmmakers from Asia-Pacific countries, including the US, Korea, Australia, Singapore, New Zealand and Russia. Indian filmmaker Shivajee Chandrabhushan’s “Frozen” won the Best Feature Grand Prix. Canadian director Anais Barbeau-Lavalette’s “The Fight” won the Special Jury Prize.

According to the festival’s website, the Best Director award comes with a $15,000 cash prize; the Best Actress honor, with $10,000. The all-female jury was headed by Denmark’s Vibeke Windelov who produced Lars von Trier’s films, including the Cannes 1996 Grand Jury Prize winner “Breaking the Waves.” The members were Japanese actress Momoi Kaori, Korean producer Oh Jungwan, US producer Sarah Hoch and Russian director Svetlana Proskurina. Prior to leaving for Russia, Mendoza wrote a letter to Rolando Andaya, secretary of the Department of Budget and Management, appealing the reimbursement of his expenses at the Cannes film fest.

Mendoza said he requested for P1.5 million but the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) approved only P1.1 million, which was reduced to P942,000 by the DBM. In the end, Mendoza said he received only P696,097.20 five months after the Cannes event. Lali Suzara, FDCP executive director, told the Inquirer that the grant was subject to government accounting procedures. “Mendoza failed to produce required documents and receipts,” she said, so he didn’t get his full reimbursement.

Rose Anne Cu-unjieng de Pampelonne jewelry designs in ‘Vogue’

Written by Ms. Confuse on Friday, October 03, 2008

PARIS-BASED ROSE ANNE Cu-unjieng de Pampelonne is set to be the next big Philippine fashion star, if she isn’t one already. Her bejeweled accessories, or “cuddly ornamentation” as she likes to call them, were recently featured in In Style (modeled by pop superstar Rihanna) and Elle. Last September, they get prominent exposure in Vogue (Rachel Weisz on the cover) in the magazine’s jewelry report. It was also in that magazine that she was featured about two years ago as one of Paris’ “secret addresses,” for her embellished clothing designs, which are made in Nepal. She is in the spotlight again as her accessories make a big dent in the creative and crowded world of international fashion. Last June, I was in Paris to interview and photograph this design powerhouse for this newspaper and for the cover of the Philippine Tatler, out this October. We did her shoot and interview at one of the homes she designed, a gorgeous toney two-story apartment with a breathtaking view of the Eiffel Tower.

I have known Rose Anne for quite some time and we manage to make time for catching up whenever I go to the City of Light. She is always very accommodating and kind-hearted. She loves to entertain and hobnob with the city’s ultra-chic crowd. The last time I was there, the wife of Louis Vuitton chair and chief executive Yves Carcelle, Rebecca, was giving Rose Anne a birthday party. Invited were some Filipinas like the very lovely Yvette Lhuillier-Warnod (Monique’s beautiful sister, a carbon copy of her mom Amparito) and Ria Agousti whose furniture and accessories are sold in Barney’s as well as in Paris.

Passion
Rose Anne’s passion for creativity and sense of style has always been innate. She has taken lessons in painting in Florence and design in Paris. A good friend prodded her to open an interior design company upon seeing her work on the apartment she was then living in. Today she is an accomplished interior designer with a coveted clientele all over the world. Her home has been featured in countless magazines and this column reported the coverage of her own home in Elle Décor (US) last April. She also had a showroom in Manila called Artemis (now owned by Baby Girl Fricke) and her partners include her sister Libet Virata, Conrad Onglao, Anton Mendoza and Doris Ho. Her jump to fashion, and now jewelry, has progressed naturally. She says it all started with embroidery that did not work on the clothes she designed. She kept them and made them into necklaces.

When asked how growing up in the Philippines has influenced her work, she answered, “What I appreciate about having been born in the Philippines is the Filipino sense of flexibility and diplomacy (good manners over brutal frankness) as they help cushion the rough bumps along the way.” Prompted further on why she went into accessories/ jewelry design after being an interior and fashion designer, she said, “I know that it is mad to have added another profession albeit one which does complement the other; but it just happened!” So how does she put it altogether—being an interior, fashion, jewelry designer, a wife and mother? Rose Anne has been married for 20 years to the investment banker, Baron Bruno de Pampelonne; they live with their three handsome sons Dominic, Ludovic and Alexis. (Incidentally her oldest son Dominic was photographed her for the Tatler cover). She says, “I’m so busy that it would be a great luxury to have more time. Problem is, even when I’m tired, I don’t want to stop, because I love what I’m doing... When I feel I’m beginning to be overwhelmed, I go home.” Rose Anne adds, “I am looking forward to spending more time with my family; they are really my most incredible inner circle. Hopefully more years of creating and, wistfully, finally learning how to delegate in the good old Filipino way.”

Gary Ruiz is lead exterior designer of ‘Green Car’

Written by Ms. Confuse on Thursday, October 02, 2008

ON its 100th year anniversary, the world’s largest automaker, General Motors Corp. launched its much-anticipated “green” car, the Chevy Volt. Sharp, sleek, and sporty, it is vaunted to leapfrog all competitors in the race to bring the greenest, coolest environmentally correct car in the market. Proud of its game changing design and performance, GM promptly introduced its lead exterior designer to the press, particularly the Filipino-American media, since, it turns out, Gary Ruiz, 33 is a Filipino-American, born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio. This second generation Filipino-American understands Tagalog but can’t speak it well. No matter. His designs speak an international language well understood by all.

Ruiz initially studied pharmacology and was on his final year at Ohio State University when he grew enamored with industrial design. Quite a big shift from chemistry to engineering but Ruiz dove into it and, soon, was in the center of the world of automobile design. Shortly thereafter, he was assigned to a leadership position in one of GM’s high-priority projects, the E-Flex Design Studio, where he and his team were charged with the aesthetics of the exterior design of GM cars, particularly the Chevy Volt. He was also involved in the initial designs of the GM’s latest muscle retro-car, the 2008 Camaro. Ruiz is proudest of the fact that GM put in a concerted effort to produce a vehicle like no other — an electric car that’s “beautiful, and that’s going to decrease dependence on oil, reduce emissions, appeal to environmentally conscious drivers as well as to gear heads.”

Here is an electric vehicle that will run for 40 miles on single battery charge before it switches to gasoline use. In an all-electric mode, when the generator kicks in, it will rack up 100 miles to the gallon. The Chevy Volt has just catapulted GM to world prominence and, in Ruiz’s own words, “long term prosperity.” At 100 years old, GM has left big footprints in automotive history and is leaving fresh new ones at the forefront of the race to save the planet.

Citing a report from the Philippine consulate general to Los Angeles, the DFA said Jess Espanola won the 2008 Emmy Award for Outstanding Animated Program (for programming less than one hour) given by the Academy of Television, Arts and Sciences for his work on "The Simpsons - Eternal Moonshine of the Simpson Mind."

Philippine Consul General to Los Angeles Mary Jo Bernardo Aragon, together with Zen Lopez, former Arts and Culture Commissioner, City of Glendale; Mr. Errol Santos of Hollywood Presbyterian Hospital; and Mr. Larry Pelayo of Asian-American Peoples Journal, congratulated Espanola. Disney and Japanese animation companies are among those that have employed Filipino animators.

Casino in your home

I once had a talk with my neighbor about any musical instruments he can play. I told him about me and my siblings playing more than one instrument. My brother then showed him some guitar skills he learned by himself. Unfortunately, my neighbor doesn’t play any of the musical instruments we play. Instead the music he hears all the time is the sounds of the slot machines in online casinos. I guess living in the Sin City does have an advantage. Indeed the casinos here in Vegas are amazing. They all have wonderful unique designs that never fail to amuse any visitors. Unfortunately, I can only enjoy the beauty of the Casino here in Vegas. I cannot enjoy the fun of playing those slot machines by myself since I am considered underage. Yeah, no longer a minor but not yet old enough to play in the casino. But that’s okay there are many ways to enjoy the fun of casino online games and the internet is just one way. I may not be able to play on an exact slot machine but who cares – that’s what the internet is there for. For more fun and excitement visit Casino.de

Pinoy Civil Society Road Show in Europe

Written by Ms. Confuse on Thursday, October 02, 2008

A premier of Ina, Anak, Pamilya Mother, Child, Family) ” is part of the European road show by the Overseas Filipinos Worldwide Caucus for Sustainable Development that began on Sept.12 to 14 in Bern, Lucerne and Geneva, Switzerland, moved on to Rome on Sept.21, and ends in Amsterdam and Maastricht in the Netherlands on Sept.27 and 28.

This hybrid documentary-feature film is written and directed by Jenny Pearl "JP" Bautista, and produced by IMPACT (Information Media for Progress thru Alternative Communication Technologies Inc.). It stars veteran actors Joel Torre, Eula Valdez and Angel Aquino, with upcoming artists Miguel Aguila and Jade Lopez.

Launched last July at Cinema 10 of SM Megamall, Ina, Anak, Pamilya has been described as a "non-mainstream” film “presenting the vicious cycle of problems that hound OFWs and their families. Information and entertainment, fact and fiction were conscientiously mixed to raise consciousness among migrants, families, policymakers, private and civic sectors of society as well as move viewers."

Director Bautista notes, “The experience of coping with the Lebanon crisis is one sad and painful reality and must not be repeated and this is what makes the movie timely and relevant. The film can be a good rallying point for all sectors to re-visit the 'Reintegration Program’ of government’ in the hope of putting all ‘actions and resources’ together to ensure full force implementation – as a long term empowerment for OFWs and their families towards achieving social and economic stability – starting with the family."

A forum on the topic is conducted after the film showings. Part of the activities are trainors’ training in financial literacy and a peer counseling seminar offered by the Philippine-based Atikha Overseas Workers and Communities Initiatives Inc.

Towards a Global Forum on Migration & Development

Launched by Filipino migrant organizations in Belgium, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Germany, Denmark, France and Italy, this European tour is a follow-up activity of the Expert Meet and International Migrant Conference held in the Netherlands in October and November 2007, when the Overseas Filipino Worldwide Caucus for Sustainable Development was organized with Stichting Habagat as secretariat. This road show is part of preparations for the coming Global Forum on Migration and Development in Manila in October 2008. The Overseas Filipino Worldwide Caucus is working on signing cooperative Memorandums of Agreement with local LGUs partnered by OFW hometown associations. The Caucus “hopes to work with at least 30 LGU officials” on sustainable development.

Working with them in the Philippines are Atikha, IMPACT, and the Philippine Department of Labor and Employment National Reintegration Center for OFWs (DOLE-NRCO).

Singapore eyes more Cebu tourists

Written by Ms. Confuse on Thursday, October 02, 2008

The Singapore Tourism Board (STB) is reaching out to the Cebuanos to come and visit their country. The STB has identified Cebu as a target market for its tourism roadshow. “I find a lot of potential here in Cebu with the number of Cebuanos visiting Singapore. I think the time is also good (to promote Singapore),” said Lynelle Seow, Singapore Tourism Board area director for Philippines and Brunei. Cebu is Singapore’s second visitor-generating city from the Philippines, next to Manila. More than 20,000 Cebuanos visited Singapore in 2007. The figure was 27 percent higher compared to 2006 record, said Seow. But the number went down by 14 percent or about 2,000 Cebuano arrivals from January to August this year compared to the same period in 2007. “But this is a global trend because of the performance of the economy,” Seow told . She said the Philippines is the ninth tourism source market of Singapore. The country has 10.3 million tourist arrivals in 2007.

The STB will have its first roadshow in Cebu, carrying the Uniquely Singapore brand from Oct. 4 to 5 at SM City Cebu. For the Cebu roadshow, Seow said they target families and young professionals, who travel with their friends, to come and visit Singapore. Seow said they had focused marketing efforts and advertisement in Manila since the STB office was established in the Philippines last 2004. Under the Uniquely Singapore brand, the STB is promoting the country as exciting leisure destination, a global education schoolhouse, a center of business meetings and conventions and as a leading healthcare service provider. “Singapore is a unique combination of the east and the west. There's so much to do in every place that you can create a story in every destination,” she said. Based on the 2015 development master plan, Seow said all estates will be connected by parks and gardens, a way of strengthening Singapore's image as a garden city. While it is known as a shopping destination, Singapore is still up for more developments. In 2010, Universal Studio will open on Sentosa Island. In 2009, an integrated resort will rise along Marina Bay where underwater restaurants, arts and sciences museum and casino, among other,s will be located.

In terms of education, Seow said business, culinary, fine arts and new media courses are popular among Filipino students. Other tourist attractions include the Singapore Flyer, which gives visitors a view of the islands at 42 stories high, and the Orchard Road, a retail and entertainment hub which has 30 malls. Since Singapore is a “unique blend of cultures,” Seow said the country also has its version of Chinatown where trendy retail stores, bars and restaurants can be found.

World Ten Ball gets going sans Filipino stars

Written by Ms. Confuse on Thursday, October 02, 2008

For sure, the first-ever World Ten Ball Championship will not see a “Magician” or a toothless wonder as champion. Neither will it crown a “Lion” as one. Heck, even “Superman” will not get his chance at redemption in a setting as big as the one last year, when nerves proved to be his kryptonite. Neither will the world’s No. 1 player be around. But even then, the foreign contingent in the $400,000 tournament still believes that the Philippines has a formidable cast in the event which gets going Monday at the Philippine International Convention Center in Pasay City. “As Filipinos, they should be here, playing,” German top gun Ralf Souquet told the Philippine Daily Inquirer during the event’s launch Sunday at the Sofitel Hotel. “We wouldn’t do that in Germany. Everyone will play for (our) country. “Their absence doesn’t take anything away from the (local) field,” he added. “Not having them doesn’t mean that it would make a foreigner a sure winner. The Philippines still has a lot of mighty good players out there.”

Souquet, a former World Pool Championship (9-ball) winner, was referring to a group of top Filipino players—led by fellow ex-world champs Efren “Bata” Reyes, Ronnie Alcano and Alex Pagulayan, last year’s WPC runner-up Robert Gomez, and current world No. 1 Dennis Orcollo—which opted to sit out the event because of differences with organizers. But the bald-headed German believes that “anyone among the Filipinos (in the field)” could still pocket the $100,000 top prize and earn the distinction of being the first 10-ball world champion. “I don’t have much experience playing 10-ball,” Souquet confessed. “I have played, maybe, 8 to 10 tournaments in the last 10 years. Though I only won one, in 1999, in Charlotte (North Carolina), I’m giving myself a good chance here.” Left to spearhead the local fight are Marlon Manalo, Antonio Gabica and the flamboyant Jeffrey de Luna, a trio of players which Malta’s Tony Drago, undoubtedly the fastest player in the world, said is talented enough to represent one country.

“The Philippines is well represented,” Drago said. “Not having those players just took a little spice out of the event. But the Philippines remains formidable. “And besides, who would want to miss playing here,” he asked. “Playing pool in the Philippines is like playing soccer in Brazil.” Manalo refused to acknowledge the pressure of being one of a few who is now being looked upon to deliver for the Filipinos. “It would have been better had they been here,” Manalo, the recently crowned national champion, said of Reyes and company. The opening ceremonies will be at 10 a.m. Monday. The draw was held late Sunday night. A total of 128 players in the main draw will be divided into groups of six who will play a double elimination format. Play shifts to knockout in the last three days.

Wu Chia-ching, another former 9-ball champ, banners the rock-solid Taiwanese delegation. Though he will be playing with a borrowed cue stick after losing his old one, worth more than P300,000, in a cab in Guangzhou, China, Wu is also giving himself a good chance. Shane Van Boening, the consensus player to beat in last year’s WPC won by Englishman Daryl Peach, is also among the favorites.

Boracay, Palawan among Asia's top vacation spots

Written by Ms. Confuse on Thursday, October 02, 2008

Travelers from all over the region have chosen Boracay Island and Palawan province in the Philippines as two of the best holiday destinations in Asia this year, according to a Web poll by online travel magazine Smart Travel Asia. The 2008 online poll showed Boracay and Palawan ranking seventh and eighth respectively in the top 10 holiday destinations in Asia. Palawan shared eighth place with Chiang Mai, Thailand. Both Philippine destinations were jointly ranked seventh in the 2007 Smart Travel Asia poll. Boracay is famous for its white sand beaches, which make it a popular tourist spot in the country. On the other hand, Palawan is rated by National Geographic Traveler magazine as the best island destination in East and Southeast Asia region in 2007, and the 13th best island in the world having "incredibly beautiful natural seascapes and landscapes." Some of the most famous tourist spots in Palawan are the Calauit Game Preserve and Wildlife Sanctuary, Coron Bay in Busuanga and the El Nido Marine Reserve Park.

The otherworldy Bali, Indonesia was chosen Asia's top holiday destination in the Smart Travel Asia poll for the third straight year followed by Phuket, Thailand; Kerala, India; the island republic of Maldives; shopping mecca Hong Kong and Bangkok, Thailand. Angkor, Cambodia ranked ninth place while Koh Samui, Thailand and Rajasthan, India both shared tenth place. Smart Travel Asia said the poll results revealed the continued dominance of Thailand as a "holiday brand" with four destinations in the Top Ten, and the strong emergence of India. The same poll also showed El Nido Resort Lagen Island in Palawan ranking among the top 25 leisure hotels and resorts in Asia this year.

According to Smart Travel Asia, the poll results reflect the online voters' "substantial hands-on travel experience, word-of-mouth at dinnertime chats, as well as an idea of the brand drawn from advertising and editorial exposure in the media, which is mostly online." Smart Travel Asia is the region’s only dedicated online travel magazine with over one million readers worldwide. Vijay Verghese, Smart Travel Asia editor, said voters in the annual travel poll took an average 15.5 annual air trips and earned $175,162 with roughly 60 percent based in Asia, 20 percent in UK/Europe and 20 percent in the United States

Pinoy charity organization conducts Filipino classes for Pinoy kids in UK

Written by Ms. Confuse on Thursday, October 02, 2008

The Philippine Centre, a Filipino charity organization based in Hounslow, West London has been conducting Filipino classes for over a decade now. The classes, which aim to promote and cultivate Filipino language for the benefit of the next generations of Pinoys in the United Kingdom are held in a community center in Hounslow. Parents chip in funds for the rent of the venue but the classes, which are held every Saturday for two hours during the school term, are free. Many of the Pinoy students attending the classes were born in the UK and consider English their mother tongue. Speaking Filipino is now a challenge for them. “Para lang they will familiarize with the terms and the meanings. It has been going on for quite some time now. At saka ‘yong aking mga students din as they grow up nawawala. Tapos ‘yong mga anak pumapalit. So it’s just generation to generation,” said Ester Limotlimot, a volunteer teacher at the Philippine Centre.

The classes, composed of some 15-20 students, are conducted in a very informal style. Basic greetings, grammar and pronunciation are taught and topics for discussion are injected with information about Philippine history, geography, and culture. Sessions in the afternoon include Pinoy songs and folk dances which are part of the children’s cultural exposure and enrichment. “They have to learn the language and also the Philippine history and bits and pieces of things about the Philippines. They have to know their origin. It’s very important kasi yung identity nila malalabas nila through their language. Hindi naman kasi lahat dito nagta-Tagalog sa kanilang bahay. So kawawa ang mga bata ‘pag umuwi sa Pilipinas. Although ang mga bata sa atin nakakapag-English. Di naman everything na lang mag e-English ka,” explained Limotlimot. There is no age limit for the classes. Although most of the attendees are under 16, three-year-olds and adults alike enjoy the general experience of bantering in Filipino.

Charina Padua Boys is a forensic fire investigator in London. She has been attending the classes for over a year now. For Boys, the only adult professional in the group, it is never too late to learn Filipino. “My mother is Filipino. I have a lot of family and relatives (in the Philippines) and we visit once a year and we go back every Christmas. Everyone else speaks English to me and I just thought it would be nice to go back to the Philippines and actually conversate in my own language rather than expect everyone to include me by having to speak English. I didn’t learn it as a kid because I didn’t have a lot of Filipinos around me and I just thought if I don’t learn now I don’t think I ever will,” she said. Thirteen-year-old Alyssa Babaran takes her Filipino classes seriously. “I guess I don’t really know the real feeling to be a Pinoy because I’m not living there at the moment but my classes bring me a step closer to feeling like a full Pinoy. You don’t really have an excuse not to know Tagalog. It’s the national language of the Philippines and I think every Filipino should know it,” she said.

They are maybe thousands of miles away from the Philippines but learning Filipino culture and language make them feel closer to home. “I live in the UK so I can get all of the British culture that I want. Coming here gives me that little bit of the Filipino culture,” said Boys.

Alberta opens doors to OFWs

Written by Ms. Confuse on Thursday, October 02, 2008

The Canadian province of Alberta has opened its doors to overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) after signing a memorandum of understanding with the Department of Labor and Employment (DoLE). The agreement, signed by Labor Secretary Marianito Roque and Alberta Minister of Employment and Immigration Hector Goudreau, will allow Filipino doctors, engineers, nurses, and other professionals to work in the Canadian province. This is the fourth such MoU signed with a Canadian province; the others were with Saskatchewan, British Columbia, and Manitoba. "The MoUs with the four Canadian provinces underscore our efforts at ensuring that Filipino workers seeking overseas employment are afforded ample protection from unscrupulous illegal recruiters and exploitative employers overseas," Roque said. The MoU also seeks to ensure that the Philippine workers’ training and credentials are recognized in Alberta and meet the Canadian province’s occupational standards.

It commits to the "ethical recruitment, selection, and protection and skills development" of OFWs who will be deployed there, but did not specify the number of workers to be hired. Deployment would have to meet not just Philippine and Alberta laws, but also those of international bodies. Among these is that no recruitment fees will be charged the worker. "All recruitment costs related to the hiring of OFWs under the MoU shall be covered by the employers in Canada. This means that neither the employment agency in Canada nor the recruitment or sending agency in the Philippines is allowed to charge any recruitment fees in any form from OFWs bound for Alberta," the labor chief said. Roque said OFWs who wish to work in Alberta still need to apply through recruitment agencies authorized to recruit for Canada.

To actualize the MoU, both parties will establish a working committee tasked to coordinate activities on their shared priorities. For the Philippines, the labor department will develop mechanisms to facilitate the deployment of qualified OFWs to Alberta, including those living outside the Philippines. As a start, Alberta employers who wish to recruit OFWs working temporarily outside the Philippines are encouraged to course their manpower requests through the Philippine Overseas Labor Office in the country where the OFWs are located. Many OFWs in the Middle East, particularly professionals, use their experience there as jump-off points for jobs in the United States, Canada, Europe, and Australia. Government statistics show that as of December 2007, there are 462,935 Filipinos in Canada, 410,626 of who are permanent residents, 49,309 temporary, and around 3,000 irregular.

The Grandest BACK2BACK Concert of Pinoy Talents

Written by Ms. Confuse on Thursday, October 02, 2008

Every so often a show of diverse production with limited concept is presented to entertain and at least alleviate our kababayan from the routinization of their daily grind and the harshness of the current economic meltdown. ‘Though it’s true that the entertainment values were incorporated but somewhere, something seems to be missing—the total package! Special Edition Press, Inc. (SEP) and Trump Taj Mahal offer a grand show & concert of a long list of big named celebrities to be shown on Saturday, Nov. 29, 2008 at 7:00 PM at the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City.

Heading the line-up is the Philippine concert queen Pops Fernandez (fresh from her Divalicious High-energy concert series), RP’s Comedy King Dolphy (who’s still in cloud-9 following his successful movie team-up with his heir-apparent Vic Sotto and his four-score b-day celebration), enticing chanteuse par excellence Zsa-Zsa Padilla, plus an array of fresh and in-demand talents in the local showbiz and tin pan alley: voluptuous performer Geneva Cruz, “Star In A Million” singing sensation Kris Lawrence, the R&B Prince Jay-R and the new generation’s Jukebox King April Boy Regino.

As if the above-mentioned A-1 caliber celebrities won’t suffice to fill the stage, Dolphy’s equally talented sons also join the cast. Actor-director Eric Quizon leads his siblings Jeffrey, Boy 2, Ronnie and Vandolph in their specially prepared production numbers as part of the event’s tribute to Dolphy’s long successful career span in the entertainment business.

Had there been a show elsewhere in the East Coast with such impressive cast? There’s none yet but this one. What better way to spend a Thanksgiving weekend than watching an all-star Filipino concert on Saturday, Nov.29, 7pm in Atlantic City! The BACK2BACK concert is a talent-loaded event that promises a total entertainment package for the entire family to enjoy.
